This 3-day immersion gently blends and delves deeper into the work and practices of Somatics (Thomas Hanna) and Somatic Yoga (Eleanor Criswell), blending the natural flow patterns of the soma with Hatha Yoga to make SomaFlow Yoga. This immersion brings together Somatics and Somatic Yoga for students and practitioners of movement, mind/body practices, Yogis and Yoginis. Participants will explore and learn adaptations for a gentle approach to enhance the Soma’s natural/organic patterns of movement that create awareness, decrease tension and pain, and enhance natural flexibility.

Soma Flow Yoga explores the realm of Somatics and takes Yogis and students of movement further into expanded movement patterns that are not explored in the book Somatics.  The focus of the three days is to awaken the sensorimotor system (Somatic Nervous System) to a greater range of movement, a more coordinated repertoire of movements and balanced functional patterns (Soma Flow) that can be integrated with Yoga.

All Human Somas have the same muscles, joints and developmental patterns of movement essential to learn to move in a relaxed, comfortable and efficient manner. In the first year of living children learn through common functional patterns to roll, crawl, sit, stand and walk. In this course you will learn to understand, use and progress from somatic movements in Somatic Yoga Level I and to integrate them into Soma Flow (Level II) movement patterns centred around rolling, crawling, sitting and standing.  These patterns enhance Yoga because they return our Somas to larger natural movement patterns that helped develop the Human Soma in the early phases of life.
When we think of Flow we often associate it with a gentle wind or a stream of water with little resistance to where it goes. In Soma Flow Yoga we use the same idea in application to movement, breath, mind and spirit. Soma is the body, mind, emotion, and spirit experienced within.

 

 

Somatic Flow Yoga
(21 hours)

This immersion will introduce self pandiculation techniques, that can be taught to students/clients helping to gently enhance muscle lengthening to create greater ease in Asanas.  The pandiculations will be specific to the Soma Yoga Flow sequences.  Students will receive a booklet with pictures and teaching instructions of the Soma Flow Yoga sequences and pandiculations.

Somatic Yoga is a gentle mindful practice that combines the principles of Somatic Science and movements with Yoga.  It can enhance any approach to yoga including the external and internal aspects. Somatic Yoga is a fusion of eastern and western sciences and health practices.  The creator of Somatic Yoga was Eleanor Criswell, PhD.  It is a blend of principles of Raja Yoga, Yoga Psychophysiology and of Hanna Somatic Exercises and Education.

This training course will be taught by Andrew Teufel and Violet Reynolds who are both RMT’s, and RDYT 500 graduates.  Andrew has been a Yogi for 30 years with a personal practice in Somatics for 24 years, and Violet has been a Yogini for 11 years with a personal practice in Somatics for 12 years.  They have an extensive knowledge base of anatomy, physiology and movement.
