Somatic Flow Yoga
Somatic Yoga Deeper Integration
In this introductory/beginning course students will study two practices: 1) Somatics and 2) Somatic Yoga.
This 3-day immersion gently blends the methodology and practices of Somatics (Thomas Hanna Somatics) and Somatic Yoga (Eleanor Criswell Hanna). Participants will explore and learn adaptations for a gentle approach for those beyond the Myth of Aging and for those with acute and chronic pain. This immersion brings together Somatics, The Myth of Aging and Somatic Yoga for students and practitioners of movement, Yogis and Yoginis. The gentler modified movements that will be taught are not in the book Somatics. Participants will receive a booklet with pictures and teaching instructions of all movements presented.
We will explain the science behind Hanna Somatic Education. Students will learn to understand the Autonomic and Somatic Nervous Systems, the three reflexes of stress and Sensory Motor Amnesia. The three reflexes contribute to twisted/unbalanced posture and changes to function. Through Somatic Education and Somatic Movements, Sensory Motor Amnesia can be re-educated so our Soma (mind/body) can relax and fluid movement returns contributing to more comfort and function in the Soma.
Somatic Yoga blends the two practices Somatics and Yoga to enhance change for human improvement, development and awareness. Somatic Yoga relies on slow, easy to achieve, natural movement patterns and postures so that the Soma relaxes easily. With less strain comes less pain making it easier to go into other movements and postures/Asanas. Movement and Yoga teachers will learn how to blend Somatics and choose the Somatic movements appropriate for the level of students to help enhance the asanas and pranayama.
In Somatic Yoga: Movement Meditation, you will learn safe Somatic movements that parallel particular yoga Asanas allowing safe easy progression into the Asanas. This Somatic Yoga immersion starts with the easiest Somatic movements to teach the easiest yoga Asanas. By starting with the lowest common denominator (students with pain and restricted motion), we address the fundamental movements in the safest way. You will also learn to assess and observe how your students may present with unconscious patterns that may contribute to pain or restrictions in yoga Asana.
The Somatic approach emphasises Ahimsa, the yogic principle of non-violence. Somatics is a movement modality that is more accessible to those in pain and those with restricted movements and helps bring a sense of enhanced body awareness.
Somatic Yoga is a gentle mindful practice that combines the principles of Somatic Science and Somatic movements with Yoga. It can enhance any approach to yoga including the external and internal aspects. Somatic Yoga is a fusion of eastern and western sciences and health practices. The creator of Somatic Yoga was Eleanor Criswell, PhD. It is a blend of principles of Raja Yoga, Yoga Psychophysiology and of Hanna Somatic Movements and Education.
This training course will be taught by Andrew Teufel and Violet Reynolds who are both RMT’s, and RDYT 500 graduates. Andrew has been a Yogi since 1986 with a personal practice in Somatics since 1993, and Violet has been a Yogini since 2006 with a personal practice in Somatics since 2004. They have an extensive knowledge base of anatomy, physiology and movement.
